My work is all about trees and wind. I am trying to find out whether wind damage plays a significant role in the global forest carbon cycle and if so, how we can better predict it. As the climate changes local wind speeds are likely to change too - this means that trees which have developed for a given wind climate will face a new one. Will they be able to adapt and if so, how?
Most of my work is modelling. I use terrestrial LiDAR data to get 3D tree structures and then take an engineering approach to model how these structures move in the wind. In order to validate these models I have completed six months fieldwork in Wytham Woods, Oxford, and am at the start of more fieldwork in Danum Valley, Malaysia.
